New Feed and iTunes

I hate that Apple is still so central to the podcast ecosystem. Not only did they drop the ten year old feed from my existing podcast, but they are rejecting the feed for the new podcast. The reason? Basically my cover art isn’t pretty enough.

  1. I start off angry with Apple, by default, because the only way to submit a podcast is through iTunes. I just happen to have a Mac for work, otherwise, I’d be SOL.

    • I can fix it but I can’t do that until I am home and have access to my project files. Oh, and even if I fix it, no guarantee my new project will be approved by the gatekeepers at Apple. *sigh*

  2. I remember the shouts of joy when iTunes added podcasting support. I did and still do think that is the single worst thing that ever happened to the medium. I got into this to get away from centralized gatekeepers, not to anoint new ones.

  3. I can’t say I was that prescient at the time, more likely feeling validated. With the benefit of hindsight, I agree with you, and then some. Especially since it seems like Apple’s enthusiasm has waned, having a disproportionate and negative impact on a medium I still consider to be quite lively.

  4. Every time I look at a web page for a podcast I want to subscribe to and the only link they have is an iTunes link, I weep salty tears all the way to Feed Flipper.  I don’t blame the individuals, they didn’t create this belief that iTunes and podcasting are synonymous.

  5. Slightly off topic, but also as annoying are artists who only release their music on iTunes. Hello, what happened to Amazon? I just assume those folks don’t want my money.

  6. I fear to everyone’s point, I am the exception rather than the rule. I work very hard to make sure my podcasts are as widely accessible as possible, wherever anyone might find and subscribe. Sadly, that includes playing into iTunes’ crappy dominance but I make sure all my podcasts, past and present, have plain old RSS feeds, that they are findable on Google, and there are clearly differentiated choices in terms of format.

  7. The cover art you created wasn’t the problem. For the Command Line feed, the problem was a technical issue. For the Audio Diary of a Peculiar Character, I didn’t export my design as high enough resolution for them.

  8. Guess I should update my art someday… they did send me a warning email about resolution a few months back. But as I faded a long time ago and have a straight RSS feed it doesn’t seem very pressing.

  9. They sent me an email a while back, too, but it was a mass message. When my latest SSL cert update broke the feed, they didn’t send me anything, I just had to discover the break on my own.
